Sharon Beloin-Saavedra is a lifelong New Britain resident with a passion for serving her community. Sharon has extensive local governmental experience. She served twelve years on the Board of Education, eight of those years serving as President. In this capacity, she was directly involved in budgeting, contract negotiations, policy development, family outreach, and several superintendent search committees.
Sharon has also served four non-consecutive terms on the Common Council as an Alderwoman, being elected into leadership during her most recent term. In this role, she has helped create and direct policy, been an integral part of the budget process, and supported the development of downtown and streetscape projects along main City arteries.
Additionally, Sharon was Chairwoman of the 2022 New Britain Charter Revision Commission, and has served on the School Building Committee.
As an outspoken leader on school renovation projects, Sharon jump-started the program with the DiLoreto Middle School expansion which was followed by Gaffney, Smalley, Chamberlain, and now Holmes Elementary School. On the Council, she has been a strong advocate for our Parks throughout the city, most recently the Osgood Park total overhaul and the new playscape and basketball courts at Martha Hart.
As for public safety, Sharon is currently involved with the Vision Zero Task Force aimed at reducing serious injury crash incidents throughout the City and recently worked with the New Britain Police Department to establish an autism registry for the 911 system - helping both families and first responders handle calls and engage effectively with our citizens. She has been an outspoken advocate and supporter of the New Britain Police Department and other first responders.
Sharon Beloin-Saavedra’s platform includes a focus into neighborhoods, where she plans to go ward-by-ward to speak with residents about their concerns. Tax relief, education, safe streets, quality of life, and maintaining financial stability also top her list of priorities.
With the cost of living getting higher by the day in our state Sharon is committed to keeping New Britain's taxes as low as possible in order make our city a more affordable place to do business, raise a family, and retire. As mayor she vows to work with all elected officials to keep the mill rate down, minimize budget increases, and prioritize spending on quality-of-life issues.
It is Sharon's belief that reducing taxes works hand-in-hand with smart and sustainable economic development, and therefore she seeks to add to the Grand List of our city in order to reduce taxes for the residents of our community. On top of this Sharon will continue to streamline city expenditures to ensure lower taxes and a stable budget so that our residents can afford to live in our community and that our government services remain sustainable.
Keeping New Britain safe is among Sharon’s top priorities. As mayor she will continue her track record as an outspoken supporter of New Britain’s Police, Firefighters, and EMS; making sure our first responders remain well equipped to ensure the safety of our streets and residents. Sharon is also an avid believer in building upon community engagement among the ranks of our first responders while celebrating and promoting what already exists.
Another part of Sharon’s public safety platform is fighting the opioid epidemic. Over the past year the number of New Britain’s opioid-related deaths has been cut in half. As mayor Sharon will continue to support the NB Recovers Program championed by Mayor Erin Stewart’s administration.
Sharon is currently involved with the Vision Zero Task Force aimed at reducing serious injury crash incidents throughout the City and recently worked with the New Britain Police Department to establish an autism registry for the 911 system - helping both families and first responders handle calls and engage effectively with our citizens.
The children of our community are our most vital and precious asset to the future of our city, and thus it is imperative that their education be made a priority in efforts to match the academic prosperity seen by our neighboring school districts.
As a mother of three Sharon knows firsthand that among the city’s top priorities is to provide an affordable, safe, and quality education for the children of New Britain. With Sharon’s twelve years of experience on the Board of Education serving eight of those years as its President she is more than prepared to fight for the future of New Britain’s children on day one.
As Mayor she will work collaboratively with the Board of Education to ensure that the Consolidated School District of New Britain’s spending priorities supports the city's nearly 10,000 students. She will be a strong advocate for increased State support of public education in our community as the State must meet its constitutional obligation to fully fund education.
Sharon is committed to improving and strengthening our city’s infrastructure. As mayor she will constantly search for ways to improve roadways to calm traffic, and beautify our neighborhoods through fighting blight, sidewalk improvements, trees, signage, and improved lighting.
Furthermore, Sharon believes in making our city parks exciting, safe areas to gather and play. Additional projects will be forthcoming. It is a commitment to our neighborhoods.
With just shy of 2,000 businesses calling New Britain home Sharon recognizes that the city must continue to expand its commercial tax base to lower taxes. As mayor she will work around the clock with our development office and the downtown district to increase opportunities for small business entrepreneurs and continue to make downtown a vibrant place to live, eat, gather, and do business.
Through Sharon’s economic policy, she will also aim to attract new businesses to New Britain to create increased job opportunities within our borders and reshape our city into a hub for career development and windows for employment.
Here in New Britain just under 60% of our neighbors rent their homes or live in apartments, and our city’s rental vacancy rate is under 5%. Increasing opportunities for affordable housing is important so our residents have more disposable income and ability to save money. Not to mention increased costs of housing disproportionately impacts seniors living on a fixed income.
For these reasons Sharon aims to search for available areas to create affordable options for senior housing. As mayor she also plans to expand the Navigators program as well as Building Hope Together (BHT) to increase interactions with our unhoused population while working with our non profit network to increase emergency and transitional housing. She recognizes that state participation is critical in this area to increase regional efforts in creating livable supportive housing in and beyond New Britain.
